![]() SVALBARDSA' This is a very interesting river. It is of medium volume and runs in the wild northeast region of Pistilfjorour. Fished with 2 to 3 daily rods, it is hailed in Iceland as a “big fish river”, as are all the rivers in this remote region. When fishing the rivers of Pistilfjorour, you get the feeling that you are alone with the rugged nature. Svalbarosa has a normal summer catch of 200 to 300 salmon and often the average weight is among the highest in Iceland with a lot of mws and a few 20-pound plus salmon. It is fast and rocky in the upper reaches, where many of the best pools are to be found, then slower further down. Always though perfect for fly fishing, quite often you find yourself so close to the mighty Atlantic salmon you can watch him lose his cool and grab the fly. At the estuary, there is the added possibility of catching large sea char on the high tide, making exceptional fare for the evening barbecue. As usual for Icelandic rivers, the Svalbarosa' is best fished with small flies and hitched tubes. Early season and/or spates call for heavier terminal tackle to be available, but the best sport is by using the light tackle that fits this river perfectly. Here we have a voluntary catch and release program but anglers are asked to put back all mws salmon, as they have been declining here as in most places. As by Ulfarsa', Laxa' I Kjos and Gljufura', we will be taking into use a new lodge on the Svalbarosa', a lodge fit for a beautiful, prolific river in sensational surroundings. This is a self catering river with no house staff to take care of you, although it must be said that some of our guides are exceptional cooks. Svalbardsa' Gallery
