Fly Fishing Belize Path: Home > Fly Fishing - Destinations > Belize Fishing - Belize Destinations A Mixed-Bag of Options & Itineraries Here are a few of the many trips that we run in Belize. We also do many other customized trips with private homes and executive chefs, Catamaran Mothership trips and a whole host of other options. 10-Day Island Hopper 8 days fishing, 10 nights $4300 USD per person based on 2 anglers There is a very rich tradition of island culture in Belize and each of the inhabited cayes that run down the coast of the country has its own distinct vibe and speed at which the daily routines of life are carried out. The Island Hopper Trip is designed to allow guests to experience the diversity of three of these islands while enjoying some excellent fishing throughout the country. For the first week, guests will fish and travel from island to island by flats skiff, while staying inside the protective safety of the Barrier Reef. On Day 8 of this adventure we have the guests flying from Caye Caulker down to the middle part of the country where they will enjoy 3 nights and two days of fishing the superb permit flats around Water Caye. There are very few angling destinations in the world where this kind of a trip can take place, other than Belize and we are the only company that offers this trip. The first stop on the trip is San Pedro, where guests will spend four nights and have three days of fishing. During the day, anglers can hit the tarpon flats or chase tailing bonefish down in the Congrejos Cayes. At night, the excellent restaurants and lively bars will serve up a nice assortment of food and entertainment. Stop number two on the trip is Caye Caulker, where guests will stay for three nights in this very friendly lobster fishing village. Caye Caulker is much smaller than San Pedro but there is still plenty socializing at night and some great establishments to frequent when a lobster dinner and a cold beer are in order. During the day, Hicks Caye or the mainland might be on the agenda if tarpon and permit are a priority? The last stop on the trip is three days at Water Caye. This is the smallest of the three islands and also the slowest in terms of nightlife. The island is one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen. The lodge at Water Caye is very comfortable and guests will love the proximity of the cabanas to the reef, which is no more than a hundred yards away. The snorkeling is excellent and the permit flats are the best in the world. Water Caye 6 days fishing, 7 nights $3250 USD per person based on 2 anglers There are very few places on earth that possess more natural beauty than Water Caye. Located right on Belize’s world famous Barrier Reef, Water Caye is a gorgeous mix of palm trees, sand and translucent aquamarine waters. Pictures simply can’t do it justice! What we really like about this location is that it’s one of the few places in the world where guests can fish for the traditional flats species, especially permit, and then go outside the reef for blue water game fish, all in the same day. At just 30 minutes by boat from the coastal town of Dangriga, getting to Water Caye is pretty straight forward and you can be bonefishing on the back flat between the island and the reef, on the afternoon of your arrival. We handle all the logistics of getting there so guests don’t have to worry about anything! Tailing bonefish can be seen from the porch of your cabana and the odd time you’ll even see a permit or two fining in the shallows of the flat. At the south end of the island guests will discover one of the most beautiful beaches imaginable. Powder white sand slops gently into the sea and the reef is a leisurely 2 minute swim or snorkel away. Water Caye is situated right in the middle of what we estimate to be the best skinny water permit fishery in the world. The flats extend both north and south of the island and we’ve never been anywhere that consistently produces more permit than this location. Some of the flats are as close as a 5 minute boat ride from the island. The permit fishing here takes place on tidal flats in about 1-3 feet of water and guests will be casting to tailing permit in much the same way they have for tailing bonefish in other locations. It is the ultimate angling challenge! Tarpon are also available at Water Caye, with the best time to target the silver kings being late spring and early summer. There are several schools of resident tarpon that can be fished year round. This is not a location for those new to fishing the oceans and we don’t recommend Water Caye unless you have at least one or two saltwater trips under your belt. San Pedro/Water Caye Split Trip 6 days fishing, 7 nights $3250 USD per person based on 2 anglers If you’d like to fish and experience two very distinct areas of Belize in one trip, we offer the San Pedro/Water Caye Split Trip. This trip encompasses two unique fisheries and settings that will thrill just about every fly rodder. For the first half of the trip, guests will spend 4 nights, with three days of fishing, based out of San Pedro, in Northern Belize. This location is very good for bonefish and tarpon and guests can expect to get shots at permit, jacks and maybe the odd snook. The San Pedro fishing area is enormous and guests will have a wide variety of angling options and opportunities. The town of San Pedro is a charming beach community with a laid back atmosphere reminiscent of the Florida Keys 30 years ago. There are lots of bars, restaurants and shopping to entertain at night, after a day on the flats. Mid week, guests will fly from San Pedro down to the coastal town of Dangriga. From there, it’s just a 30 minute boat ride out to Water Caye, where guests will spend 4 nights with 3 days of fishing. This small 12 acre island is worlds away from San Pedro in terms of pace and size. Located right on the reef and in the heart of the finest permit flats on earth, Water Caye is an excellent place to target tailing permit in shallow water. There are also a couple of resident schools of tarpon that can be fished year round and when the weather cooperates, guests can slip outside the reef looking for the schools of tuna that run as close a quarter mile from the island. All of the logistics of this trip and getting guests from one location to the other are handled by us in a seamless manner to ensure no down time and a hassle free experience. San Pedro 6 days fishing, 7 nights $2700 USD per person The town of San Pedro is a very angler friendly and is an ideal place for a week of fishing, particularly if there are some non anglers in the crowd. As beach towns go, San Pedro is about as good as it gets and everyone who lives here seems to know it. The bars and restaurants in town pulse with a happy mix of locals and visitors and because the town is so centralized, pretty much everything is within a five minute walk of the hotel. When fishing out of San Pedro, we really like the Sun Breeze Hotel. It’s extremely well run and has all the amenities necessary to make your trip to San Pedro a comfortable one. Situated right on the beach and right in the heart of town, it’s just a short walk down to the boats each morning after breakfast. The Blue Water Bar and Grill is located right next to the pool and is, without a doubt, the best restaurant in town. The food is wonderful and Kelly and Megan, who operate the restaurant, always take great care of our guests. Expect to gain a pound or two, at least! If you’re looking for a drink after a hot day on the flats, the bartender, Chris, is an old friend and he makes a mean Mojito. While the town of San Pedro is relatively small, the area that our guests fish when based out of village is enormous. It is also an incredibly diverse fishery that will produce an astonishing variety of challenges and opportunities. From wading flats along the mainland for tarpon and snook (yes, wading) to fishing in the solitude of the Bacalar Chico Marine Park, on the Mexico/Belize border, the options for anglers are almost limitless. The San Pedro area is chalk full of bonefish and while the fish aren’t as large as some parts of the Bahamas or Florida Keys, they certainly are more cooperative. The tarpon fishing out of San Pedro is legendary, with the big fish showing up in the late spring and summer. We have also been experiencing a renaissance of the permit fishery in San Pedro over the past 3 years. The number of permit our guests have been catching from this location has been nothing short of extraordinary. This is an ideal location for those who are new to the saltwater game and for the more accomplished angler looking to chase a Slam. Permit School 6 days fishing, 7 nights $3400 USD per person based on 2 anglers If there’s one thing we know about at Belize Flats Fishing, its fly fishing for permit. This is our specialty and there are very few more knowledgeable sources for information and education on this challenging pursuit, than our team. Belize is fortunate to have been blessed with the best permit fishing on the planet. Simply put, there is no destination better for chasing these fish! At Belize Flats, we have taken full advantage of this situation by fishing up to 100 days a year in skinny water for permit. We’ve had countless days to observe these fish feeding in their natural habitat while sponging up insight from some of the most skilled permit guides on earth. We’ve put together the only week long school of its kind, which focuses exclusively on the challenges of shallow water fly fishing for permit. The classroom seminars usually take place after dinner and are relaxed and informal. There is usually a box of Cohibas circulating the room during the discussions and we limit the class time to about 45 minutes in length. As always, the location for this years’ Permit Schools is Water Caye, off the coast of Central Belize. This beautiful island is located right on the reef and in the heart of the best permit flats I’ve ever seen. We prefer this location to all others because of the outstanding number of fish that can be found here, coupled with the fact that the flats are a hard packed coral base, which makes them excellent for wading. The dates for this years’ Permit Schools are: February 2-9, 2008 SOLD OUT March 8-15, 2008 SPACE AVAILABLE March 29-April 5, 2008 SPACE AVAILABLE April 5-12, 2008 SOLD OUT May 3-10, 2008 SPACE AVAILABLE Seminar topics include: Rigging your rod (knots, leaders, tippet) Working with your guide Permit Habitat Tides and moon phases Presenting the fly Hook set and playing the fish Tying crab and shrimp patterns This week is geared towards anglers with saltwater experience and is not available to beginners. Placencia 6 days fishing, 7 nights $2450 USD per person based on 2 anglers A half hour flight south of Belize City, situated at the end of a 20 mile long sand peninsula, sits the town of Placencia. This laid back town of 1100 residents is a great backdrop for a week of fly fishing in Belize. The town has some really nice restaurants and bars, all within easy walking distance of each other and there is plenty to do for the non angler. When staying in Placencia we really like the suites at Easy Living. The location of the hotel is right in the heart of town and only about 30 yards form the ocean. Each brightly decorated suite has two bedrooms, a comfortable living area with cable TV and a full kitchen and bar area. Guests enjoy the flexibility of being able to either cook their own meals or heading out to one of the many good restaurants nearby. The suites are large and roomy with lots of space for gear and anything else a dedicated fly rodder might travel with. Placencia was put on the fly fishing map because of the permit fishing on the flats to the north-east of town. These flats are excellent for those interested in wading for their shots at this weary game fish. Permit can be found here in strong numbers and there are few permit fisheries better than these flats. There are also several resident schools of tarpon that live year round off the coast and in the mangrove estuary to the west of town. These fish average between 20-80 pounds, although larger fish are available during the summer and fall months. The huge mangrove forest to the west of town is a good place to fish if the wind is really ripping out on the ocean side flats. This area has very little angling pressure as most of the rods that come to Placencia tend to focus on the permit flats. Guests can fish south to the Yacacos Lagoon if the weather cooperates and can easily fish Monkey River during the course of the week as well. This is a good mixed bag location for anglers who have non fishing partners. |
